holiday memoirs v.1 (or.... why i've grown out of wanting a 'perfectly' coordinated Christmas tree v.1)

i love decorating for Christmas. there is just something magical about opening the boxes of *stuff* and seeing everything with fresh eyes after an 11 month hiatus. it all seems to hold an emotional tie for me (surprise, surprise). is it that way for you too?

these are from aeryn's first day care. oh how i hated taking her there. don't get me wrong, the teachers were phenomenal, but i wanted to be home with her.

for Christmas the kids painted salt dough ornaments and i was in heaven. putting these handmade little ornaments on my totally matching tree made me a changed woman. what seemed like a gorgeous tree at one point, now seems lacking. it's the handmade things i cherish the most. oh sure, i still pick up ornaments every year to add to my collection. I have some real beauties. my tree is a crazy mixture of dollar store, nordstoms, small boutique indie artist, and kid creations. i really love it that way. nearly everything tells a story.

when i see these, i remember her first Christmas program. dressed as a reindeer and dancing with jingle bells in hand. all the under 2's were supposed to sit in boxes while the older kids sang and danced. true to her personality that was not acceptable. she wanted to participate in everything the rest of the kids were doing.

when i see these, i realize just how true it is that we enter this life with a personality all our own. quirks, talents, and passions just waiting to be discovered.

when i see these, i feel love so strong that no words can suffice. and that, i believe, is what Christmas should be about.
